The children and adolescents of this country need our help.  There is growing epidemic (in more ways than one) and it is called childhood obesity.  Due to an increased sedentary lifestyle, many of today’s youth are becoming obese.   In fact, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past thirty years.  In 2012, more than a third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.  Obese children and adolescents are at risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and osteoarthritis, metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, asthma, sleep apnea, orthopedic complications, and fatty liver disease.  Overweight children are more prone to develop stress, sadness, and low self esteem.

While many factors can cause a child to become obese, a main contributor is a lack of daily physical activity.  Currently, only half of American children meet the current “Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans” recommendations of at least sixty minutes of daily moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity.  As parents, we need to be aware of our responsibilities for the health and well being of our children.  It is important to understand the many positive benefits of increasing the physical activity levels of our children.
